Sue's Tips for keeping your Pooch in Tip-Top Condition!

Daily Food

Always feed your pooch a "Super Premium" brand food, I recommend "Royal Canin", this is a "complete & balanced " diet, so you don't have to worry about vitamins, minerals and nutrience, it's all in there. (I don't recommend Eukanuba any longer as they were caught doing horrendous experiments on healthy animals and I will not support any company who is cruel to any animal!).

My dog's are all fed Royal Canin and all dogs coming to stay will be too. So if your dog comes to stay it is better they are on the same food as it will stop any diahrea or stomach upsets when they arrive and when they leave.

The recommended feeding guide is 80% Royal Canin + 20% Other, this is for treats, fresh raw meat mixed with Royal Canin and fresh raw bones 2-3 times a week to help keep those pearly whites clean - dental work later on is expensive not to mention grossly smelly and also, painful for your pooch! Remember, prevention is better than cure!

Suggested Extras: I give my dogs "Missing Link", this is a powder you add to their food with a little water or fresh raw meat. It is the "missing link" to fresh food - all food is processed and "Missing Link" has all the stuff lost through processing - they have it for Humans, dogs & cats. I'm sure this is the reason Matey lived to 18 years and also why Fudge, Bob, Murphy and Dolly are so healthy - they very rarely suffer from infections, skin conditions or anything else.

An alternative to the above would be an all natural diet, it is very fiddly, but if you have the time I would recommend reading "Give Your Dog a Bone" by Dr Ian Billinghurst. If you go this way, do your research to ensure you are including all supplement vital for your dog's good health - I would still recommend "Missing Link".

FRESH WATER MUST ALWAYS BE AVAILABLE TO YOUR POOCH! In Summer, use a bucket or several bowls, incase they run out or knock one over. Try freezing a bowl of water and let it melt during the day (however, don't let your pooch lick it straight from the freezer - their tongue might get stuck!

Vaccinations are a yearly Vet Visit - this is a good time to ask the Vet about any other problems you have noticed - get your money's worth!

Adult dogs need to be vaccinated annually for the rest of the life. This vaccination covers parovirus, distemper, hepatitis, canine cough.
Note: Canine Cough is similar to a human flu vaccination ie it covers most of the bacteria of the virus, however, your dog may still contract a mild cough. Should this happen, consult your Vet.

Fleas
are common in the Eastern Suburbs due to our sandy soil, which is an ideal breeding ground for them, however, they are a problem in all areas. They also carry tapeworm.

Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes, so remember all dogs are susceptible. Heart worm can kill your dog. Prevention is possible by a monthly tablet or spot on treatment or a yearly injection for the rest of their life.

My recommendation for Flea, Heartworm, Ear Mite & intestinal worms (except tapeworm) Prevention is "Advocate", which is a "spot-on" treatment once a month.

The Alternative is: annual injection for Heartworm + monthly (or 3 weekly) dosage for fleas + 3 monthly intestinal worming.

Intestinal Worms are different from Heartworm and your pooch must be given an "All Wormer" every three months, this kills the worms they have picked up in that time. If you haven't been doing this regularly, give them a suitable dose and then again in 2 weeks and then every 3 months after that.

Puppies:

If you have a puppy, please remember to check their collar either daily or weekly, they are growing every minute and their collars don't!

Now, down to the really important part of your pooch's life, Exercise and Socialisation!

Well it's obvious isn't, for all their physical and mental stimulation, let them come out with me!

Please remember all my recommendations are just that, recommendations. They come from my own personal experiences and years of trial and error. Each pooch is unique and you should always be guided by your dog's heath and your regular Vet.
